Planned Giving and Gifts of Appreciated Securities

Planned giving offers a variety of life income and estate advantages to help you improve your financial outlook as well as provide much needed support for the services provided to the community through UMass Extension. The UMass Extension development office offers options on how you can plan your future giving to prove advantageous to you as well as UMass Extension.

For complete details on Planned Giving at UMass Amherst, see the UMass Amherst Planned Giving Guide, and Plans of Giving comparison chart.

Types of Planned Giving:

  1. Charitable Gift Annuity
  2. Charitable Remainder Trust
  3. Charitable Lead Trust
  4. Gifts of Life Insurance
  5. Gifts by Will

Charitable Gift Annuity

A contractual agreement between a donor and the UMass Foundation that provides a guaranteed fixed income for the lifetime of the donor, or for the lifetimes of one or two beneficiaries chosen by the donor. The gift will provide a significant immediate income tax deduction and part of the guaranteed income may be tax exempt. At the end of the annuity, UMass Extension will receive the gift to use as directed by the donor.

Charitable Remainder Trust

A Charitable Remainder Trust is a trust that allows the donor to make a charitable gift but retain for life, or a term of years, the right for specified beneficiaries to receive payments from the trust. Upon death of the last surviving income beneficiary, the remainder interest is turned over to UMass to create an endowment fund for Extension. Charitable Remainder Trusts generally qualify for income tax and gift tax or estate tax charitable deductions.

Charitable Lead Trust

A Charitable Lead Trust provides UMass Extension, through the University of Massachusetts, with income for a term of years or during the donor's lifetime. At the termination of the trust, the assets are returned to the donor or designated "non-charitable" beneficiaries such as donor’s family members. When highly appreciated assets are removed from the estate, gift and estate taxes are minimized.

Gifts of Life Insurance

Life insurance policies may be used to make substantial gifts to UMass Extension. Paid-in-full policies as well as current policies can be designated for use by Extension. Careful structuring of these gifts can provide tax benefits to the donor as well as provide significant gifts to the program.

Gifts by Will

An outright bequest is the simplest means of obtaining an estate tax charitable deduction while investing in the future of UMass Extension.

It is important that you use proper and precise language in your will so funds are used in the specific manner that you intend.

If you want to designate stock for the general support of UMass Extension, you should include the following language:

To the University of Massachusetts Foundation, Inc. at 225 Franklin Street 12 Floor, Boston, MA 02110, I give _________ for the general support of UMass Extension at the Amherst Campus of the University of Massachusetts.

NOTE: Consult you personal advisors for specific legal and tax advice.

Gifts of Appreciated Securities

UMass Extension offers an attractive giving option for those who possess appreciated securities and wish to make a valuable contribution to Extension. A gift of appreciated securities is a popular alternative to a cash gift because it allows the donor to make a larger gift than he or she may otherwise be able to afford. This type of gift also allows the donor to save taxes twice. Not only does it provide an income tax deduction for the full fair market value of the securities (if held more than one year) but capital gain taxes are also avoided on the appreciated value.
